When did you begin your court reporting career?
Former California CSR 1993, Texas CSR 2013
What sparked your interest in choosing court reporting as a profession?
The career appealed to me because I viewed it as highly technical, rewarding, and respected.
What advice would you give students or those just entering the field of Court Reporting?
I would advise future court reporters to choose their school wisely. I am a firm believer that the school plays a big part in your educational/examination success. Do your research, join Facebook groups, ask many questions, and find a mentor immediately upon entering the field. The things you don’t know are more extensive than you think. This is a career where you never stop learning to become that professional you’ve always pictured yourself as.
What is your favorite thing about being a reporter?
As a freelance reporter, I love the flexibility, the opportunity to learn more and more daily, the impact I believe I have in the legal field. It’s satisfying to see my work improve with each transcript I deliver.
As a Court Reporter, what is your worst nightmare or biggest pet peeve?
As a court reporter, my worst nightmare come true would be to arrive at a job and discovering that my equipment malfunctioned in some major way! I work hard to maintain my equipment and only purchase top-of-the-line products to avoid this disaster! Knowing I have LiveDeposition, the most reliable realtime equipment on the market, and the support they provide, helps me do my job with confidence.
Where is the strangest place you have taken a deposition?
The strangest place I have ever taken a deposition is in a conference room so small it could have been a closet. Seven people stuffed in a tiny room makes for a very intimate conversation! I could barely move my elbows!
What is the funniest thing you have heard during a deposition or in the courtroom?
After warning the witness to slow down several times, finally the attorney told the witness that I had threatened to take off my shoes and throw them at her. Of course, I had never said that, but I almost choked laughing, as did everyone else in the room.
When not court reporting, how do you spend your free time?
I spend my free time with my 25, 22 and 20-year-old college daughters, my 14-year-old son, and my wonderful friends. I sing in my church choir, bowl, read, and travel as often as I can. I love the ocean, enjoy walking as exercise, and try to find new places to check out some good smooth jazz on the weekend!
What do you like most about LiveDeposition?
Obtaining the ability to realtime was a goal I wanted to accomplish for a long time. When I finally purchased the LiveDeposition product, I was amazed at the seamless integration with my machine and software. This product has become a very important part of my court reporting toolbox and I now can’t imagine how I ever lived without it!
