When did you begin your court reporting career?
2008
What sparked your interest in choosing Court Reporting as a profession?
I witnessed a trial in 1991 and was absolutely intrigued by the court reporter and her ability to keep track of the entire courtroom on that tiny, funny looking machine.
What advice would you give students or those just entering the field of Court Reporting?
Don’t accept discouragement. You will fail every day in court reporting school – until that one day when you don’t. This is a wonderful career that technology is moving right along with, and it’s amazing to be a part of such a small group that can call themselves stenographers. There are so many different career opportunities to explore as a stenographer. Keep focused and stay on it!
What is your favorite thing about being a reporter?
Hard to answer – Meeting new people every day, working in different locations.
As a Court Reporter, what is your worst nightmare or biggest pet peeve?
Worst nightmare – equipment failure. Pet Peeve – people talking over one another.
Where is the strangest place you have taken a deposition?
Not really a deposition – but in a parking garage, leaning against the hood of my car. After getting kicked out of a doctor’s office, attorney wanted to note that for the record, so we did.
What is the funniest thing you have heard during a deposition?
I usually find more humor in my own misstrokes than I do from what’s being said around me. But a recent crack up went like this:
Q. What’s the problem with your wife?
A. She has no memory anymore. She can’t remember things.
Q. How long have you been married?
A. 60 Years
Q. Impressive. How old is your wife?
A. 70
When not court reporting, how do you spend your free time?
Golfing.
What do you like most about LiveDeposition?
Reliability, ease of use, the “WOW” factor I get from attorneys about how easy this is to use and not having to change settings in their computer. The ability to be able to provide a realtime feed to any device they have – from a laptop to a tablet to a cell phone, as well as I only have to carry my uber light router to be ready to provide this service on the spot, even if it wasn’t asked for.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
This is a wonderful career. It’s very challenging, and it’s not understood well. It’s a challenge every day to keep up with people who don’t understand the complexity of what a court reporter does, but thankfully technology is making our jobs easier, and it’s really satisfying to be able to use my LiveDeposition technology to “WOW” attorneys and show them things they didn’t even know were possible.
