How Webcam Killed the Polycom Star!

It was August 1st, 1981 when the first music video was played on MTV. It was by a band called The Buggles and the song was “Video Killed the Radio Star”.  My sister and I watched this video and blasted the television, we were part of a revolution! The video was so clear, the sound was so good, and the songs that we had only listened to on vinyl record and tape cassettes were now right in front of us in real life on TV! At that time I thought this was the coolest thing ever!

This childhood memory most recently came back to me during a conversation with one of our clients where we were discussing the issues they have been coming across when trying to sell traditional Polycom videoconferencing to law firms.   The issues they have been facing have occurred when attorney’s wished not to leave their location or travel to a conference room equipped with Polycom hardware for a video deposition.  Ten years ago this was the only option, but things have changed; technology has changed.

Today, web-based video conferencing is a normal occurrence.  It has made its way into everyday usage for millions around the world on both personal and professional levels.  For attorneys this means never having to leave the comfort of their home or office, never having to secure a conference room, and never having to invest in expensive traditional videoconferencing equipment.  In order to attend a deposition remotely, all an attorney now needs is an internet connection, a computer or mobile device, and a web camera.

Back in 1981, the video, the song, and the entire experience of “Video Killed the Radio Star” on MTV was amazing! Today, they don’t even play videos on MTV anymore.

Things are changing all the time, and with technology it seems like they are changing every second. Just like with music, with technology, you will always have times when you “want to hear a song from your past” because it is safe, and brings up memories of a different time, a more comfortable, easier time.

Your clients may be resistant to try today’s web-based videoconferencing technology over traditional Polycom-based technology because it is not what they are accustomed to, but you need to cut the cord and encourage them to make the change.  Change is scary, but it is also imperative to the success of a modern business.

Give your clients the simplicity they want, with the quality of today’s technology. Talk to them about using LiveDeposition at their next proceeding for a secure video-to-video experience that they can attend right from their office.
