When did you begin your court reporting career?
1985

What sparked your interest in choosing court reporting as a profession?
The intrigue of a flexible schedule, the ability to make a good living, and the opportunity to be challenged every day. I originally wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon. Since chemistry is, by far, not my strong point, I turned to court reporting. It allowed me to learn a little about a lot of things. I love doing medical depositions! Now if I could just get one of my deponents to invite me into the operating room.

What advice would you give students or those just entering the field of Court Reporting?
The journey is difficult, but the rewards are worth it. Don’t ever quit in your pursuit of knowledge, self-growth, and excellence. Graduating from school is just the beginning of your journey. Certification, continuing education through your state and/or national association, and exploring new technology await you at every turn. Be involved in your career. Make it a career, not just a job.

What is your favorite thing about being a reporter?
Most days we are given the opportunity to learn something new, meet people from all walks of life, provide value, and grow professionally. The opportunities are there; you just need to grasp them.

As a Court Reporter, what is your worst nightmare or biggest pet peeve?
Attorneys who have little regard for making a good record and don’t treat reporters with respect.

Where is the strangest place you have taken a deposition?
Sitting on the tailgate of a Fed Ex truck while the attorneys described the damage from an accident. This was back in the days of a paper tray. When I wasn’t writing, the challenge was trying to keep my paper under control.

What is the funniest thing you have heard during a deposition or in the courtroom?
Of course, when I need to think of something, I can’t. Things tend to blend together after 30 years!

When not court reporting, how do you spend your free time?
Being active. I love spending time with family and friends. I enjoy exercising and being outdoors golfing, skiing, boating, or doing yard work. I enjoy volunteering for the Wisconsin Court Reporters Association and NCRA as well. Not only do I make great new friends and professional connections, I learn valuable new technology and make great memories.
